There’s a lot that goes into being a nanny—and so much more to make you a successful one. But what are the most important things to focus on? Here’s what Jada Rashawn, experienced nanny and family consultant, thinks are the 2 most important things you need to succeed in this career.

Good Communication

When you’re speaking with a parent about a potential job, you want them to be able to do 2 things based on what you say:

  1. Listen
  2. Respond

This is how you’re able to determine what wants, needs, and goals each of you has and can best determine if those are in alignment with each other. Effective communication from the start can eliminate any surprises later—after you’ve already started the job.

  • Be honest
  • Be transparent

Remember: it’s not just about what you say, but also how you say it.

It’s easy to get stuck in one style of care. However, every family is unique and has different needs. Being able to learn and grow with each job will help you do your best and be prepared for other jobs in the future.
