When it comes to conversations about mothers in the work place, there’s been way too much focus on the perceived challenges. Stereotypes include lack of commitment, too much flexibility required, and lower productivity, and this prejudicial thinking has cost women, who experience a wider pay gap as they start to have children. A recent study from the Pew Research Center found that women 25 to 34 earned 92 percent of what men earned, but that gap widened to 83 percent for women 35 to 54 and to 79 percent for women 55 to 64.

But new data shows that motherhood might actually strengthen a slew of important skills that help women navigate work as well as relationships and everyday life. Mothered Media just published The Future of Working Motherhood 2026: The Maternal Strengths Report, and wow, are there some interesting findings. If you’re anything like us, you can’t help but nod your head as you read, since it validates what we’ve known for years: Moms are probably the most efficient, productive, and adaptable beings on the planet. Some of our favorite highlights?

Superpower #1: Time Management

Mothers reported being more than twice as adept at managing their time effectively after becoming a parent. In fact, time management showed a 123% increase, the highest jump among the capabilities measured in the study. Was there any doubt?

Superpower #2: Energy Allocation

After having a child, mothers became twice as intentional about where they focus their time, attention, and resources, reporting a 100% increase in this area. Energy is precious, and no one gets that like moms.

Superpower #3: Prioritization

Need to figure out what matters most? Ask a mom. In this study, mothers reported a 56% increase in their ability to prioritize tasks, projects, and goals.

Superpower #4: Decision-Making

No ambivalence to be found here. Becoming a mom fostered an uncanny ability to make choices under pressure: Before having children, 44% felt confident in this ability, but after kids? That figure jumped to 87%, and that includes the choice to ask for help from a trusted caregiver. (Find one at Sittercity.)

Superpower #5: Negotiation

From delineating boundaries to advocating for work place flexibility, the art of negotiation improved dramatically. Mothers reported an 83% increase in these skills, which are honed all day long.

Superpower #6: Communication Under Pressure

Ask any mom who’s had to keep the peace when kids are yelling, tantruming, or playing tug of war with a juice box. Engaging in tough conversations while remaining calm can be a daily occurrence. A key part of parenting is communicating under pressure, so it’s probably not surprising that mothers reported a 60% increase in their ability to participate in productive dialogue when the heat is on.

Superpower #7: Conflict Management

Running interference between siblings, balancing competing needs, and navigating family dynamics are all part of motherhood. No shock that mothers reported a 41% boost in their confidence around handling conflict.

Superpower #8: Leadership Skills

Taking charge of a team? Moms show major growth in this area, reporting a 34% boost in confidence in their ability to lead.

Superpower #9: Empathy

Becoming a mom is often linked to an uptick in nurturing and emotional labor, and this study underscored that connection. Moms reported a 27% boost in empathy and a greater awareness of the needs of others.

Superpower #10: Building Trust

Developing emotional awareness, communication strategies and consistency are all part of building trust, a skill that grew 20% once women became moms.

Superpower #11: Resilience

Moms are aces at bouncing back…. from child birth, from lack of sleep, from sick days, from schedule disruptions, from just about anything. Unsurprisingly, the mothers in this study reported a 19% greater ability to recover from setbacks and unexpected challenges.

Superpower #12: Adaptability

Um, is there anything that demands more flexibility than parenting? (We’re waiting.) Moms reported a 18% rise in adaptability.

The Upshot?

Although motherhood might not come with a shiny red cape (maybe it should?), science shows that it does deliver a invaluable set of heroic skills. Whether it’s managing time and competing priorities to navigating communication, negotiation and adaptation, moms are always fostering skills and strengths that impact every facet of their lives.

Oh, and those career myths that moms are less capable? They could not be farther from the truth, as this study demonstrates. In fact, mothers become more intentional, more decisive, and more efficient with their time, energy, and attention. They also express way more confidence in dealing with tough interactions and exhibit a laser-sharp focus on what matters most.
