My 9 year-old son, adopted from foster care, has been attending the Discovery Wilderness School home school group in Comstock Park, MI with a 1:1 aide. His aide has become a teacher, and so I need to find a new aide! His class meets on Thursdays from 10 to 2 at the Little Pine Island Salvation Army Camp in Comstock Park. My son has autism with a PDA profile, ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder, and PTSD from early childhood abuse and neglect. He needs an aide to help him regulate and to guide his behavior. He is very verbal and socially extroverted, but often fails to understand the nuances of social interactions, especially with his peers. The aide might, for example, let him stay behind the group to finish an activity if he needed more time to transition. Or take him for a walk for a few minutes if he becomes overwhelmed. His group has twenty kids and two teachers. There is an OT available as a resource for all the classes. And I always stay in the parking lot while he is with his class. Please note: This class meets outside for the entire four hours in all weather. The activities include things like fire building, whittling, fishing, hiking, swinging on grapevines, climbing trees, stomping in the mud, etc. Outdoor survival skills are not necessary, but you will need to be outside in sun, rain, heat, cold, wind, bugs, mud, etc. Aide is needed Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM February 13th through May 22nd. (February 27 and April 3 are breaks.)
