During my first semester of grad school I had the amazing opportunity to play in the 2017 Panama Jazz Festival. It was an amazing opportunity because not only did I get to play with world renowned musicians but I saw and got to know the history behind a beautiful country. However, the one thing that would change my life forever was teaching the schoolchildren. After giving a group clinic and individual clinic to these young students, their young energy extremely inspired me. A year later I became an After School Program Leader where I supervised, mentored, mediated, and taught music to middle school students. That was a humbling experience and showed me how much I needed to learn in giving effective instruction, classroom management, positive and negative reinforcements of behaviors, etc. 3 years later with the encouragement of family I made the decision to get my substitute permit in California, Read more something that is a bit of a tedious process that involves passing a basic skills test in reading, writing and math and providing transcripts of a bachelor's degree. Once I obtained my permit I began taking day to day assignments k-12 grade. Only after week I transitioned to a long term 4/5th grade assignment where I subbed for almost the entire academic school year. After that assignment I went on to do other day to day assignments in all subjects and all grades. Substitute teaching was both a humbling and amazing learning journey that I was able to go on for 2 years. After I moved and became a compute lab Assistant teaching k-4th grade computer basics and beginner coding and typing, which is my current job. While I haven't yet babysat, my experience in a school setting is very relevant and applicable.
