I love working with children because they change and grow so quickly. Even infants are learning new expressions and gestures all the time, so engaging with and observing them carefully is a very stimulating job. During college I wrote a research paper about how sleep affects the developing brain from infancy to age 16. That project opened my eyes to the intricacies of cognition, emotion, and reasoning at different life stages. One of my favorite jobs was as a camp counselor at Coppermine Field House. This was a summer day camp where I was responsible for 16 children at once. For two weeks, I was watching over 32 children ranging from age 5-8. Making sure everyone was safe and having fun was incredibly fulfilling. The most challenging part of this job was spotting disaster before it struck: like surveying the playground for hazards before the fun begins or monitoring hydration Read more levels throughout the day. From my teenage years, I was regularly responsible for watching over my twin cousins. Watching them grow and learn together was an incredible experience, and participating in home care taught me the power of a consistent routine. I also helped tutor children in English, Latin, History, Biology, and Chemistry at various homeschool co-ops. Did you know that children as young as 5 can learn calculus? In fact, the earlier children learn languages, mathematics, and musical instruments, the more easily they will be able to learn these skills in the future. I have been playing the piano since I was four years old and it is a skill I cherish. I have taught piano in the past and I'm familiar with other instruments like flute, ukulele, and drums. I was fully trained in basic life support before I was nationally certified as an EMT, although my ambulance licensure has expired. I am current in CPR training and familiar with first aid and general sick care. I'm calm under pressure and am excellent at comforting children. When entertaining children of any age, it's important to engage them with the content. For example, when reading a book together, it's important to ask the child questions about the illustrations, story, or their feelings about the content. Even if a child cannot talk, it's important to talk to them in complete sentences to prime the language centers in their minds. In other words, children are gifts to the world and hold the future in their hands. My objective is to invest in them to the best of my ability and to adapt to their specific care needs.
