I have four years of experience working as a substitute teacher, as a district-wide pool participant during the pandemic, and then as a building substitute toward the end. My last long-term assignment /instructor of record was for a self-contained program for K-4 students with high behavioral needs but without an IEP, which I accepted while I was working on a Master's in Elementary Education and Certification. After surviving a stranger’s reckless driving in the fall of 2022, I had to step back and return on a pick-up basis. Then, I began tutoring with the Illinois Tutoring Initiative (ITI). ITI provided additional training and coaching from an expert learning recovery to provide high-impact tutoring where community and skill building come together to help students overcome their stumbling blocks. I was assigned a fifth-grade group for English in one district and a seventh-grade group for math in a different district. Across both Read more groups, students saw not only test scores increase but more importantly, their participation in class and enjoyment in the subjects by seeing real-world connections that had meaning for them so they could see how they can positively impact the world. Today, I am looking for new adventures outside the traditional school environment where I can bring the creativity and dedication to care that helped my previous students recover skills and find new joy in learning. I believe in the potential of all children and that we can learn from everything because even a casual conversation can help build creative and critical thinking. I’m all in for learning through play with a relaxed approach to foster self-regulation skills so that when I leave, they are excited to share about their day.
