I was told it's important to be responsible for something other than yourself. I spent some time fostering dogs (Pitbulls, Rottweiler, Shih Tzu, German Shepard) before I decided to adopt my own little Maltipoo. I have always been the care taker for my friends and families cats, birds and fishes while they're away.
