I worked at Heartland Humane Society No Kill Animal Shelter for almost 2 years. I took care of all the inside dogs ranging from small to large, young puppies to seniors. I assisted with providing shots, transporting dogs to and from the vet clinic for check ups or surgeries. I helped with intake which is a term used for bringing in animals either from a citizen drop off, or from animal control, or in some cases found on the shelters doorstep. My job consisted of walking all dogs, potty training practices though couldn’t guarantee any dog was potty trained, I cleaned and sanitized all kennels, fed and watered all dogs, provided baths, blankets or beds, toys and treats. I also assisted in rehabilitating dogs who were aggressive because of former abuse or were injured or anemic from former neglect. If any of my dogs were on medications I gave them their medications and sometimes that involved creative measures. I bonded with each of them, I knew there individual personalities, and I loved them like they were my children. This job provided me with lots of knowledge, first aid techniques, and how to handle and care for abused animals including cats. Though I didn’t work with the cats I sometimes assisted in their intake process and witnessed the abuse that took place on these poor animals who have no voice to tell there stories. I believe in the rights of animals and I believe they need advocates. I love animals. I have a cat named Mishka whom I adopted from this animal shelter and he’s the most loving cat I’ve ever known. I may not have a degree, or a college education, but I have plenty of valid experience taking care of dogs and cats and I love doing it.
