I love pets and currently have one dog (a golden retriever). I have experience owning and caring for both cats and dogs. When pet sitting dogs I would either keep the dog(s) at my house or go by the owners house 2-3 times a day to let the dog(s) out to use the bathroom (either take them on walks or let them run and play in the yard). I would also feed the dog(s) and give them water, and clean up any messes they may have made. When I have watched cats I would go check on them daily where I would feed them, make sure they have plenty of water, play with them, and scoop the litter box when needed.
