Finding a great caregiver for your family isn’t just about identifying someone who’s free this Thursday night. It’s about ensuring the right fit for your family, someone who makes your child’s safety and wellness top priority. Once you’ve discovered some high-quality candidates (by posting a job at Sittercity, naturally), the interview is arguably the most important step. Seriously, is there any substitute for the give-and-take of a conversation as well as the gut feeling you get when talking? Not only can you have some in-depth questions answered but you’ll also get a sense of the type of caregiver they are and how they’ll mesh with your child. Ready to create your babysitter interview checklist? Let’s go.
Start by brainstorming a list of qualities that are most important to you and put them in order of priority. Maybe you must have someone who’s certified in pediatric CPR or trained in working with children with disabilities. Whatever takes the top spot, place it first then work down.
We’ve also put together some typical topics that might be top of mind. Try using this checklist as a jumping-off point then adjust it to suit your family’s needs.
Questions you can ask a potential caregiver

Do you live nearby? How can you get to and from our home? Do you have a car or access to public transportation, etc.?
Do you have any allergies to cats, dogs or other pets?
Are you uncomfortable around or scared of any particular pets?
Do you have any particular religious affiliation that might affect the way you care for our children?
Have you ever been arrested or convicted of a crime?
Experience
How many years have you been working with children and in what ways?
Can you share your past experience, specifically as a sitter?
What ages do you have experience caring for?
How many children have you watched at one time?
Do you have any formal training or certifications in early child care?

Be sure to ask for two to three child care references with both the phone number and email address so you can contact them easily. When searching for a babysitter or a nanny on Sittercity, log into your Premium account, go to the profile of the sitter you’re interested in, and scroll down to the References section to find that info.
Meet Your Kids
Give each candidate a chance to spend some time with your child during the interview. Are they excited to meet your child and at ease when interacting with them? Do they make eye contact and greet them at their level? Do they ask age appropriate questions? Pay attention and trust your instincts.
After the Interview
