I started babysitting for friends and neighbors during high school and I worked on Sundays in our church nursery with infants and toddlers. I also worked my first summer of college as a camp counselor for 4 year old boys. I truly love working with young kids. I graduated from college at Fort Lewis in Durango, Colorado with a Bachelor's in Psychology. I currently work as a 3rd grade reading specialist with Americorps at a local elementary school. I teach reading strategies to 2-3 scholars at a time and about 14 scholars total. Since I work in small groups, I really get to know the children and see their unique personalities shine through everyday. Through this job, I am more knowledgable on love and logic practices, coping skills to support trauma-exposed scholars, and restorative justice practices. This service opportunity has helped me become extremely patient and empathetic. Another strength, which Read more may seem out of context for childcare, comes from a course called Motivational Interviewing. I learned how to actively and reflectively listen, ask good questions, and affirm others. I use my skills from this course in everyday conversations with co-workers and scholars. Coupled with empathy and patience, one of my greatest skills- learned from Motivational Interviewing- is listening to others.
