I am a youthful, energetic Grandmother who is also a retired middle school teacher looking to work with families needing a Nanny or babysitter, and possibly give some help with school work as well! I have a BS in Elem Ed, and a MA in counseling Have taught for 20 years, mainly in middle school math After retirement, I worked with preschoolers at Collegeside C of C in their Mother's Day out program for 2 1/2 years, Other hands on experience:I have 3 grown children, and 7 grands. ; ) Have been a Nanny/Companion for two people with special needs. One was a child that needed daily special exercises to correct being a "tip toe" walker. The other person was a high achieving Down Syndrome young woman, age 28, but who functioned around 8-10 years old. I enjoyed working with both very much. Also, during my 20 year teaching career I Read more was fortunate to work with very high IQ students (128+) as well as students who could function in a regular classroom, despite them dealing with "being on the autism spectrum," and/or any of several other physical or mental learning disabilities. Examples of these kinds of problems: Severe diabetic, severe emotional issues (such as being a self cutter), deafness (requiring a sign language interpreter), ADHD and ADD, seizures, extreme allergies, neglect, extreme poverty, ESL students with little or no understanding of English, etc. As a result of these types of students, I began to take every Continuing Education class that dealt with these problems, and started reading book after book in an effort to be a more effective teacher. All of that knowledge has helped me in my day to day interactions with people of all ages. My three grown children, and seven grandchildren all live out of town, leaving me missing all those fun interactions with children and families. I am very hands on...I enjoy cooking, doing activities with children, playing games, reading and singing, exploring the outdoors and physical activity, and encouraging children to tidy up after activities, meals, and snacks. I will be available to drive children only after secure relationships have been established between me and the child, and me and the parent/parents. I prefer to only care for one child at a time, but will occasionally care for two or three children with special circumstances. I look forward to communicating with you about the special needs for your children and family. Marie Thompson
