I am always the first to volunteer to lend a hand to parents in need, because with the network my family created when I was a child I know it can take a village to care for a child. As early as I could remember, my mother was teaching me how to prepare food and change diapers for multiple children within her in-home daycare. I had a routine of coming home from school to help my mom wake the children from their naps at the age of 6. When I was old enough to babysit on my own, I took summer courses that taught me CPR, first aid, and child development. I took pride in volunteering my time to my mother's friends and the families of our neighborhood to allow parents time for errands, chores, and more. I have taken every job I have been offered, from the responsibilities of Read more dance recitals, to staying weeks at a time as the main caretaker while the parents took leave. Throughout my high school years I lifeguarded patrons at our community pool, and taught water safety/swim lessons both privately and in group settings. This has re-certified me in first aid and CPR multiple times. While I have professional experience as a caretaker, my experience comes mostly from my parents' influence; my father's safety concerns are instilled in me, as well as my mom's teacher-minded advice, positive attitude, and housekeeping. They have shaped me to be not only nurturing, gracious, and careful, but also with the values of family and respect. I do well keeping a child disciplined while also being fun-loving and kind, remembering to be mindful of their safety and growth as well. The best piece of advice my mother has given me is to never leave a house unkept, and I have never once failed to adequately clean up after myself, the children, and whatever animals I find myself caring for.
