Hello, my name is Kayla and I'm currently a student studying Environmental Science and Computer Science at Fullerton College. Aside from my studies, I work professionally as a freelance teaching artist. I've been working with kids since I was 16 and I love it! I started by watching my younger brother (who is turning 7 this year) after school ā I would pick him up from school and make snacks, help with homework, play, draw, nap time, potty, and have fun activities together until my parents got home from work around 8pm. When it comes to food, my brother has a peanut allergy, so Iām extra careful when preparing snacks. Other days, I would watch his friends and younger cousins as well. Then, I began volunteering at his kindergarten and elementary school as a teacher's aide. Eventually, I began teaching art and coding workshops for his classmates at school, and Read more as an artist, I went forth to teaching workshops at after-school programs across Los Angeles, Orange County, as well as New York City. After the pandemic, I moved to teaching remote workshops, and as a student myself, I have familiarity with the unique circumstances remote learning environments offer. As a teaching artist, my favorite moments are seeing the spark in kids eyes when they discover their own creative superpowers; the aha! moment when I help them to solve a challenging problem; and especially the drive and confidence they get when they make something themselves (a story, song, animation, art or creative coding project) that they can share with friends and family. As someone passionate about education, I believe kids are our future leaders and have voices worth sharing with the world; and educators have just as much to learn from kids as we have to share with them. Over the last few years, I've worked primarily with ages 6-17, but I love kids of all ages. If it's nice out, I like to have time with the kids outside, but if not, I whip out my origami skills, art supplies, and educational apps on iPad (only if screen-time is allowed!) :) I love pets and animals and have experience fostering a mother cat and her baby kittens (even though I have a mild allergy to kitties, it was a great experience.) In my free time, I love hiking, backpacking/camping, reading and cooking. PS: Ask me about my favorite picture books for young readers and I will happily share them with you! I am a native English speaker & speak conversational Mandarin
