I am the type of person who can create meaningful relationships with anyone. While I have never been a care companion professionally, I grew up spending most school day afternoons with my great grandmother who taught me to read music, play the piano, and sew. As a teenager, my basketball coach was also a special educator, and so the team (me included) spent every lunch with the kids he worked with, even after the season was over, and me personally for the rest of high school. As a young adult, I organized groups of teenagers and brought them to elder homes to visit and get to know those wonderful people and the lives they lived. Everyone is worthy of quality companionship, and curiosity about their lives, even though it can be difficult, thankless, and exhausting. When I was a high school educator, I taught several "co-taught" classes that had high populations of students with disabilities that required 504 plans and IEPs, which became so gratifying as I learned deeply about each student, their "style", and individual needs. It felt like Christmas morning every time I was able to figure out a long-term solution to a learning or processing challenge. A feeling I often chase with those with known disabilities or not. I just really get a lot of fulfillment helping people enjoy life more, even long after I am out of the picture.
