I moved from the Caribbean to the US a bit over three years ago. I quite grateful that my parents taught me to be hospitable, compassionate, and to treat others with kindness. Those attributes have been imbedded in me deeply. I served as a form of companionship/household assistant for one of late grandmother's friend. Sheila was her name and she was an amazing person; rest her soul. For about four years, I aided in ensuring that she was comfortable, happy, well-nourished and that she was enjoying her amazing life. She was still independent when it came to self care; but household activities were a bit too strenuous on her ( that's where I came in). We'd talk and laugh ( she had such an amazing sense of humour), I'd cook for us, then we'd eat and watch some television. She was a fan of the TV show Full house and she also enjoyed old Bollywood movies. For sure we bonded quite well. Whenever she was in the mood; we'd go for short walks around the village; so that she can stretch her legs a little and enjoy the fresh air. Sometimes she'd want me to take her to my late grandma's place to have a little chit chat, and be social. Growing up in a Caribbean household; cleanliness was always a must. I ensured that Sheila's house was as clean as it could be; even though she told me that I was working too hard. It was definitely a memorable four years of taking care of her. Spending time with the elderly can be very nurturing for the soul. They have so much to share and teach us about.
