I took care of my grandma who had Alzheimer’s & cooked for the other residents of the homes she was in. I planned their meals & visited with them & their families while cooking. As of right now, my dad has dementia and I help my mom with him. I believe that 1 of the last joys in their life is their food. I always incorporated their favorite foods in the weekly meal plans. I do not believe in feeding them puréed food unless it’s medically necessary. I enjoy sitting & talking to them about their life experiences because we all have a story to tell. I live in a 55+ apartment complex and I have made friends of the older people here who enjoy talking about their lives when they were younger. I enjoy talking to my dad even though he can’t remember what he was talking about 5 minutes prior. I talk to him about the same things over and over again and don’t act like we’ve talked about it before. I sit with him while my mom has appointments. He will ask me over and over where my mom is and I tell him where she is every time like it was the first time he asked. He doesn’t remember and I don’t ever want him to think that he’s going crazy. People who are older deserve respect and dignity.
