A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional certification in behavior analysis. RBTs assist in delivering behavior-analytic services and practice under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor and an RBT Requirements Coordinator1. The duties of an RBT include23:
Adhering to behavioral health plans developed by other mental health professionals to provide patients with beneficial care
Interviewing patients at their home or healthcare facility and drafting reports to relay their progress to senior mental health professionals
Assisting in developing social skills and life skills
Training for employment
Providing family guidance
Behavior reduction
Reporting and documentation
A medication technician (MT) is responsible for preparing and administering the correct medication dosage to patients under the supervision of a registered nurse or another qualified caregiver. They may also monitor patients for adverse reactions, document all medication they give, and perform various administrative tasks in the office. MTs also watch for physical and emotional changes in patients, provide assistance for daily living, and use specialized medical equipment when necessary. Most medication technicians also provide CPR and other first aid treatment as appropriate1.
To become an MT, one must have at least one year of experience in a medical environment and a current medication technician certification. These certifications are provided at the state level, and while requirements vary, they usually include becoming a certified nursing assistant, acquiring experience, or completing an approved certification program. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of this position requires customer service skills, the ability to show compassion in emotional and stressful situations and attention to detail1.
It is important to note that medication technicians are not the same as certified nursing assistants, who are rarely qualified to provide medication to patients1.
