What is covered in a LexisNexis background check prior to November 10, 2013?
Background checks performed by LexisNexis include the following:
-
I. Standard Background Checks
Standard Background Checks include identification verification and a search of LexisNexis’s proprietary criminal records database that verifies an individual’s:
- Legal Name
- Current Address
- Social Security Number
- Previous Address
- Aliases
Search of LexisNexis’s proprietary criminal records database includes:
- State criminal records
- State sex offender registries
- Prison, parole and release records from state departments of corrections, administrative offices of courts and other state agencies
Traffic violations are not included unless a jurisdiction reports them as criminal offenses. In the jurisdictions where traffic violations are reported as criminal offenses, such traffic violations may be included as felonies or misdemeanors. In most instances, records go back a maximum of seven years. For details about what sources are included in the LexisNexis proprietary criminal records database search, click here.

II. Enhanced Background Checks
Enhanced Background Checks include all elements of Standard Background Checks, plus the following:
- Search for felony and misdemeanor criminal records in the county courthouse based on the given address
- Search for felony and misdemeanor criminal records in the federal district courthouse based on the given address
Searches are conducted real-time via interactive websites, public indices, in-person and/or court-clerk performed searches at the courthouse. In most instances, records go back a maximum of seven years.
-
III. Motor Vehicle Records Checks
Motor Vehicle Records Checks include a search of a state’s motor vehicles records database based on the given state and driver’s license number provided for the following:
- Accidents
- License sanctions
- Moving violation convictions
Records in other states may not be included in the search of a state’s motor vehicles records database. The time period for which records are available varies by state. Sittercity does not evaluate the results of Motor Vehicle Records Checks. If a Motor Vehicle Records Check returns any results, a badge will not appear on the profile. If the results of a Motor Vehicle Records Check show any of the offenses below, the individual will be terminated.
- Any charge that states it is a felony or misdemeanor
- Homicide, manslaughter, or vehicular homicide
- Violence related offenses
- Drag racing/reckless driving
- Any alcohol/DUI/drug related offenses
- Hit and run/leaving scene of accident
- Evading/fleeing a police officer
- Pending suspension/suspended/revoked/expired/cancelled/invalid license status
- Fail to pay fines/fail to appear in court
The offenses listed above are described generally and such descriptions may not be consistent among all jurisdictions. It is LexisNexis’s sole discretion to determine which offenses fall within the offenses listed above. As such, similar offenses may not result in termination. For more details about the results of an individual’s Motor Vehicle Records Check, please request a copy of the results directly from the individual.
*Records not available to LexisNexis are not included in background checks. Not all arrest logs and records, conviction and correction records, sex offender registries and motor vehicle records are publicly available in all jurisdictions. In many jurisdictions there is a delay before arrest logs and records, conviction and correction records, sex offender registries and motor vehicle records are included in background checks. Dismissed cases, arrests not resulting in convictions, arrests or convictions from foreign countries, nolle pros and offenses for minors may not appear in the public record and are therefore not included in background checks. If a background check returns results, the individual will be removed from the website. It is important to remember that background checks are not foolproof and criminals may circumvent even the most sophisticated search technology. Background checks may give a false sense of security and are not the perfect safety solution.
