I am currently a senior undergraduate student studying biology at the University of Oregon, with the desires to go into medical school and study pediatric oncology. Although I am young, I have had countless experiences with various kids. Three summers ago I spent 6 days and 5 nights volunteering at Stanley Stamm Camp which is ran through Seattle Children's Hospital. This camp gifted children with multitudes of disabilities (e.g. tracheostomies, cystic fibrosis, feeding tubes) the opportunity to experience a true camp experience. Two summers ago I was offered a spot in their camps observership program but sadly could not attend due to tearing my ACL and meniscus two days prior to the camps start date. I would have been working alongside a doctor or nurse as a camp cabin counselor and getting a safe hands-on experience with the patients at the camp. After the camp I would have been visiting Read more the hospital and completing house rounds, simulations, and discussions that educate and give a deeper insight into medicine. Additionally, for two years I volunteered as a coordinator for a monthly event ran through the Northshore YMCA called Parents Night Out. Through this position, I worked alongside a staff member while we designed a night for 50+ kids ranging from ages 1-10. This includes dinner, activities, swimming, and even paperwork. Not every kid is the same, and so finding ways we can incorporate different types of children into the activities was the key to making the night successful. Additionally, with there being so many kids, allergies were one of the biggest things we had to regulate. After volunteering at the YMCA, I accepted a position as a Kidz Zone Counselor. I worked primarily with the children ranging from 8 months- 4years but occasionally worked with ager 5-10. With this role I completed all the same tasks a babysitter would do but with a large quantity of kiddos. I am also currently a teacher’s assistant for a college level course at my university. With this role I assist in teaching lessons, overlooking lab experiments, and creating course content. I have also dedicated a couple years to tutoring in elementary and individual students of every age. That being said I am also capable of assisting with schoolwork if needed. The pandemic has truly been a challenging time for young scholars, but students should all have the opportunity to succeed and reach the true extent of their academic abilities.
