Hi! My name is Nia. My first babysitting experience came from being an older sister. From there, one of my first jobs was babysitting around my neighborhood, family friend’s children, and my sibling’s and cousins children. At 16, I was employed by the UpCenter, and worked at a camp called Camp Horizon on the Virginia Wesleyan Campus. I gained a 2 years of working with children and adults of all ages with disabilities. This included changing diapers, cleaning ho fluids of all types, assisted swimming, passing medication, and that’s just scratching the surface! When I turned 18 and wasn’t away at college, I got hired by the City of Virginia Beach. Throughout my 5 years there, I worked with children ranging from 2-16 years old. I navigated into the inclusion department, where I gained a more years of experience working with children with disabilities. . I worked with the city Read more at different elementary schools and recreation centers around Virginia Beach, specifically with kids with special needs. My job tasks included monitoring participants and maintaining overall safety, memorizing allergies and health risks (prone to seizures etc.), communicating with the participant's parents/guardians daily about their performance at school, rec centers, or field trips, maintaining participants hygiene (changing diapers etc.), transporting on field trips, and documenting daily progress or regression of participants. When I was away at college at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, I volunteered tutoring in the early mornings and weekends at Carver Elementary School. Children in this area had very low scores and reading skills. I got to work with different children for 2 years, helping improve their reading, doing their homework, and overall increasing their education in an impoverished area. In addition, I have played double bass for 12 years and graduated from an arts high school in Norfolk, Virginia, and over the summers I have given paid and free musical lessons to young musicians through music and arts. I am CPR and certified in passing medications. I am also certified in Child Abuse and Neglect Training. Working with children and the youth has always been a very gratifying experience. I love making learning fun, and offering fun and creative outlets for them. I am an aunt of a 6 year old, a godmother of a 2 year old, and a big sister. It’s become very clear as I’ve matured the importance for kids to have a positive influence on their day to day lives.
