I started caring for children at 11yrs old at which time I cared for 2 children, ages 4 & 6. I prepared meals, snack, played educational games with them, read to them, bathed them and put them to bed and then did some light cleaning. At 18 I had my first child who was born with multiple disabilities so I learnd CPR and First Aid which I used quite frequently. In addition I had 3 more children back to back and my youngest was also born with disabilities. My First Aid training came in handy again after my daughter was got burnt badly by boiling water while in the care of her grandmother. Luckily I had just gotten home when I walked in the door my daughter was crying and I walked over to comfort her when I noticed she was covered in hot water. I immediately wrapped her up Read more and drove her to the hospital at which time the doctors cut her clothes off and had to cut the skin off of my child's chest and applied burn cream and then wrapped her entire chest with bandages. The doctors applauded me for not applying anything cold to my daughters chest as it would've made it worse. My oldest son had a seizure disorder and there were times I had to revive him. I also had to change out his feeding tube 1-2 times a month as well as keep the site clean and keep the feeding tube taped down so it would accidently get pulled out. In addition there were daily meds. and he was in a wheelchair so I had to put him in his chair daily for therapy, doctor appointments and etc. I learned so much just by watching the and doing things with my own children.
