Over the course of the last decade or so, I've become well-versed in caring for children from infancy through age twelve. In 2016 I accepted an offer to fulfill the role as a part-time nanny for a family with two little girls (ages 5 months and two years). Five months later, I couldn’t help but agree when they asked if I was interested in working with the kids on a more full-time basis. In late 2017, the mother shared the news that they were expecting their third, and asked that I be present for the birth. I received the call at 10 PM that she was going into labor and rushed to the Austin Area Birthing Center. Eleven hours that I am sure I’ll never forget. Early last year, just before the pandemic, their fourth child came into the world. I was present for that one as well. In my Read more nearly five years with this family, I made it a point to test out novel approaches to keep things fun, educational, and nurturing. I implemented play-based learning models that fostered cognitive development. When the time finally came, both parents and I shared the task of homeschooling the two daughters. By the time the eldest turned six, I was tutoring in reading, writing, and arithmetic. My efforts to facilitate and stimulate their distinct creative curiosities usually resulted in pigment-splattered moments of wild bliss with tiny hands full of foraged pecans and curls covered in bright blue DIY playdough. Truly, is there anything better? Last September, I concluded my time with the family in my capacity as the children’s caretaker, but we remain quite close. For countless years, I've spent summers visiting my eldest sister and her family in Istanbul, Turkey. She has two children (now ages six and nine), and they are such complex, beautiful humans whom I've watched grow with unprecedented awe. Being one of four sisters, I've honed my skills in the area of conflict resolution through years of experience (trial and error) along with the help of resources such as a conflict resolution workshop through AORTA (Anti-Oppression Resource and Training Alliance). I am always mindful of parents' specific instructions and I am eager to assist with meal prep, nap times, feedings, bed time stories, etc. Utilizing my knowledge of the fundamentals of early childhood development, play-based learning, and 10+ years of experience, I'm confident that I would be able to care for your little one(/s) to the very best of my ability.
