Meet Hannah

Hi! My name is Hannah and I am a student at Sewanee: The University of the South. In my spare time I like to spend time with my friends and family, play with my dogs, do yoga, and read. I love working with children because they always seem to offer funny and simple thoughts about the world around us that remind older folks to pause and enjoy the little things. Additionally, my mom has been a teacher for 20 years and she has always inspired me to work well with kids. I have seen the impact she has made on her students and I strive to make the differences that she has. Since I was young, I have always found myself wanting to help out with taking care of the little kids. This led me to becoming a camp counselor in the summer of 2021 and 2022. In this position, Read more I was responsible for taking care of groups of 6-10 campers between the ages of 6 and 13. I planned activites and games for them, helped them in conflict resolution, and overall ensured that they were having fun at camp! Back at Sewanee, I am an intern for the Franklin County Prevention Coalition which aims to reduce youth substance abuse and violence among kids in Franklin County, TN. In this role, I have observed and worked with kids in between the ages of 11-18. While it was not always easy to see the hardships that they were facing, it was fulfilling in the end to see that I could have made a difference, even if it was small. For the younger age groups, I observed activites that the Franklin County Prevention Coalition would have them do to promote smart decision-making, self- improvement, and drug and alcohol use prevention. In working with the older age groups, I taught them the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. I followed lesson plans to teach them objectives and organized activities where they applied those life skills. With any work that I do, my biggest goal is to bring compassion to the table. I understand that working with people/ kids may not always be easy, so I try to come from a place of careful consideration when deciding how to deal with a situation.
