I have had many involvements within my community and working with children that have helped shape me as a person, taught me life lessons and given me a sense of purpose. Helping others has taught me grace, generosity, empathy and responsibility. I worked as swim instructor at the community YMCA for 3 years. In 2019, I became certified to teach swim lessons to children with disabilities. This allowed me to hone my leadership skills while instructing kids of all ages and disabilities on how to swim. Teaching children with special needs has taught me to be patient and encouraging because everyone learns in different ways and at different speeds. I’ve also been able to experience the joy and confidence that learning to swim has brought my students. Being a part of this breakthrough with them has provided me a great deal of satisfaction. The opportunity to work with these kids Read more has also taught me responsibility, because as the children’s teacher, I have to be reliable and a good role model. Working with children has brought me a great deal of contentment and self-confidence. It also led me to start working with Charlotte Independence Soccer Club’s Youth Developmental Program as a referee for young, beginner soccer teams. As the referee for these young children, I had the opportunity to help assist coaches in teaching the fundamentals of the game as well as good sportsmanship. My goal was always to keep the games fun and conflict-free, while also teaching the kids the rules of the game and how to be good teammates. Finally, I volunteered with the York County Library which allowed me to combine my personal interests with helping my community. While volunteering at the York County Library, I helped Librarians identify potential new programming for children and young adults. The programs would be available and encourage youth to participate, and connect with the library and community. I found programs that would appeal to many interests, these included subjects like literature, but also science and math. This experience also allowed me to see how much work our county’s library does to provide services, programing and resources to our community. I am currently a student attending the University of South Carolina for Political Science. I live in Rock Hill and am seeking part time employment during the summer and hope to continue to work with children.
