My name is Kathryn Miles and I have a bachelor's degree in environmental studies with a minor in studio art. In my free time I enjoy backpacking, rock climbing, hiking, nature walks, cooking healthy meals and doing creative projects. My favorite creative projects include sewing, knitting, crocheting, painting and baking. I have one year of experience working at Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education as an assistant teacher for the Reggio Amelia inspired Nature Preschool. Being Reggio-inspired means that the curriculum follows the child’s interest and projects are created to feed those interests. The Nature preschool has a strong emphasis on social-emotional learning and free play, all of which took place on the 480 acres of protected land that is the Schuylkill Center. In this position, I gained a lot of knowledge in nature education, learning how to spark a child’s interest in the wonders of nature. I love plant and Read more animal identification as well as thinking about our place in nature. It was amazing to see how quickly the children picked up knowledge of their surroundings and felt a sense of belonging and care for their outdoor spaces. Following my experience at the Schuylkill Center, I spent two years working at Greene Towne Montessori School as an assistant teacher in a primary classroom (ages 3-6). I now have an understanding of Montessori philosophy and how it can be applied in other settings. The most wonderful thing about Montessori is the emphasis on supporting the child’s independence, and through that, confidence and a love of learning. I believe my greatest strength as a caretaker is my empathy and patience. I know that if a person takes the time to understand what a child is going through, they can help the child help them self or offer solutions that let the child know they are understood and that their experience is important. I am also energetic and enjoy being playful. I am able to do chores around the house and I love to cook and bake. I am passionate about cooking healthy meals and snacks and would be able to accommodate dietary restrictions.
