As the oldest daughter of 2 working parents I have attended to my 3 younger siblings as long as I can remember. I had responsibilities such as changing diapers, giving baths, getting multiple kids ready for bed and school, preparing meals for the whole family, and multiple other housekeeping duties. My youngest sister has Down’s syndrome and I have been her caregiver when my parents couldn’t from the time she was born until I moved out. I understand the attention, communication and understanding young children with special needs require. I realize how stressful it can be for a parent to not be able to be with their children 24/7 and I only hope to be the person parents feel safe leaving their children with when they can’t be there.
