I am a 21 year-old college student from Toledo, Ohio, but I am currently attending Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. I am majoring in Environmental Science and am living in Portland for the summer. I have spent the past 6 years looking after children. From babysitting, to being a camp counselor, to working in a nursery, I have taken care of children in most contexts. I started babysitting when I was 13 for family members and close family friends, since then my babysitting has expanded to my local community. Before I left my town for college I was regularly babysitting for about 6 different families. The summer of 2018 I decided to be a camp counselor and work with children for 2 full months. This was a sleep away camp, so I was in a cabin with about 13 girls at a time and rarely ever had time to Read more myself. For the second month of being a camp counselor I worked with special needs campers. I worked to make the camp experience inclusive to all campers; this meant working with campers to create activities catered to their needs that allowed them to participate and have a good camp experience. This year I began working at a nursery at the university I attend. I primarily work with 2 and 3 year olds, but will also, on occasion, work with children anywhere from 4-10. Working at the nursery has allowed me to see how very young children learn through experience. The importance of play is highlighted greatly at the nursery, as well as the importance of the outdoors.
