For two years, I worked at a group home, where I helped care for three men with profound intellectual and physical disabilities. Daily, I would provide personal care for them, help with their feeding, and administer medications. This one group home was my home base for this job, but I would also work at other group homes within the company when extra staffing was needed. Working at multiple group homes has allowed me to gain a better understanding of the diversity within the disability community and how different dimensions of disabilities impact people's lives. This work was done during the Covid-19 pandemic and I witnessed the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on people within the disability community. A majority of my work was done within the home because of mask restrictions and how the members of the group home were not able to wear masks due to their disabilities. When Read more mask restrictions were lifted, I was able to take the residents out into the community for weekend outings. I worked hard to reintroduce them back into the community, and the joy they expressed made it worthwhile. However, on several outings, I had to advocate against the discrimination they faced as part of a marginalized population. My work with in the grouphome home emphasized to me that it is critical to fight for the rights of our neighbors, especially when they do not have a voice of their own.
